15/03/2011 bizhub ladies excel at National XC championships
Team bizhub's Candice Neethling and Caitlin De Wet put in strong performances in
the 2011 U/23 National Cross Country Championships held in Stellenbosch on Saturday.
The U/23 title was captured by Mariske Strauss (Contego) who put in a blistering
performance on the day. In the first lap of the moderately technical 5 lap course,
Mariske caught Beijing Olympian, Yolandi Speedy (MTN Quebeka).
Yolandi Speedy together with the other Elites had started one minute ahead of the
U/23 riders. Mariska continued to blaze her way around the course for the following
four laps to finish over 5 minutes ahead of the chasing bizhub pair.
Candice who had recently won the African Continental U/23 title held on to 2nd place
throughout the race and was closely followed by her team mate Caitlin.
"I was almost speechless with Mariska's performance" said Caitlin after the event
”credit must go to her for a phenomenal performance today. I think she even surprised
herself, over the first climb she just pulled away and we never saw her again till
the finish!"
Catlin who took the bronze was satisfied with her performance on the day ”I rode
constant lap times except for the last lap when I struggled a bit. The only disappointment
was the course never really suited me as it was not at all technical for a cross
country event”.
In the woman's Elite race Yolandi Du Toit (bizhub) finished 4th overall. Yolandi
Speedy rode a consistent race in the ladies Elite event to win the coveted SA championship
jersey. Second across the line was Switzerland’s Ariane Luthi (Contego). Samantha
Sanders Claimed 3rd place.
There was some controversy at the prize giving when the organiser Alec Lenferna
opted to present the silver medal to Swiss National (Ariane Luthi). "It's a general
consensus that non-citizens may participate in a national championship but are not
legible for medals" said bizhub manager Robertson "this is the first time we have
ever seen none citizens presented with South African medals at a South African championship,
and I don't believe that it’s an ideal scenario".
"I was happy with my performance on the day” said Yolandi du Toit "but obviously
disappointed with the event organisers decision about the medals. "Previously I've
raced in Belgium National road championships but I certainly was not eligible for
a medal there".
