12/04/2011 Du Toit ends her dry spell
It’s been six months since Yolandi Du Toit’s notable win at the Ride Crater Cruise in October. On Sunday she ended her dry spell with an impressive win at the Karkloof MTB festival, currently the biggest MTB festival in South Africa with close on 3500 competitors participating in the weekends racing.
Yolandi’s weekend got off to a promising start when she finished second to team MTN’s Eszter Cluer in the Cross country event held on the Saturday morning.
“I’ve been doing a lot more cross country events this year” said Yolandi which I find is really helping with my bike skills in the marathon events, on Saturday I rode conservatively as I really wanted to win the marathon.
In the 60km Marathon event held on the next morning, Yolandi got off to a very quick start “I knew I had to get to the first section of single track in front of the other girls” said Yolandi “If you are good on the single track then you don’t get stuck behind any slower rider’s and you can really make up time on your competition.
It was a case of starting in the front and staying in the front as Yolandi increased the lead on her nearest competitor by more than 10 minutes “I thought that Eszter would be close on my heels, she’s a great rider but she faded in the second half of the race, I think possibly she was tired from the cross country event the day before which I had used mainly for training”
A smiling Yolandi crossed the line in first place followed by Heletje Van Staden (GT) in second and bizhub’s Caitlin Dewet filling the last of the podium positions.
Sunday’s win will be a much needed boost for Yolandi’s confidence ahead of the Fairburn Capital Old mutual Joberg2C where she will be partnered by Aurelie Halbwachs from Mauritius.
“I can’t wait to team up with Aurelie, as riders we are both very well matched, we know each other well as she has raced on Konica Minolta in previous years. I’ve also been told that we will be riding the event in the colours of a new sponsor called DEVELOP which forms part of the teams plans to give more ladies the opportunity to race in the big multi stage races. So we’ll have four bizub ladies at the joberg2c”
