19/06/2011 Lindi Erasmus wins Youth Day Cycle Challenge
Whilst the South African road cycling scene has quietened down in recent weeks. Lindi Erasmus from bizhub has continued with her racing in some of the less prestigious races on the National Calendar
On the 16th of June whilst most people were spending a quiet day at home enjoying the public holiday. Lindi partipated in the Youth Cycling Day Challenge held in her hometown of Port Elizabeth.
In what came as no surprise to many of the competitors the race was held in testing windy conditions, after all PE is more commonly referred to as “the windy City”
The ladies started with the elite men’s group. The fast pace coupled with the constant wind made it difficult for the ladies up front.
“At times I thought I was going to get blown off my bike, it was that windy!” said Lindi.
After experiencing some technical problems midway through the race, Lindi was forced to make a solo chase to catch the front group. After a hard chase she rejoined the front group, which by this time only contained one other lady, Alison Hertel from Walmer Cycling Club.
“Once I rejoined the group we worked well together, soon we reeled in a couple of small groups which had gone off the front whilst I had experienced the mechanical problems” said Lindi “The last past of the race was also mainly uphill, which worked in my favour”.
Lindi used her experience outsprint Hertel and take the win for bizhub. In what was to be a sporting gesture and in the spirit of Youth day, Lindi donated her prize money back to the Siyanqoba Cycling Club.
“The club does a lot for the development of grass roots youth cycling in PE” said Lindi “and I thought it would be fitting to give something back to them on youth day.”
In July Lindi will be joining some of her teammates for the Knysna Osterfees Classic, followed by the Tour de Plett Cycling Festival.
