"More mud than the whole of Yorkshire" Is What Team bizhub's Catherine Williamson
had to say following her inaugural ride at the third leg of the MTN Marathon series.
The event was held in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, Claren’s.
However despite the spectacular scenery, incessant rain the night before turned
the event into somewhat of a muddy quagmire.
The woman's race turned into a battle between Yolandi Speedy (MTN/Qhubeka) and Candice
Neethling (bizhub).
Despite only turning nineteen last week, Candice is well on her way to becoming
the new princess of South African mountain biking.
Having recently won the African Continental Cross Country Championships, her confidence
levels were soaring at the start of the event.
With only one MTN Marathon under her belt Candice, where she finished 4th in Barberton,
the young star opted for a conservative start and raced more aggressively in the
second half of the event.
Speedy raced assertively from the gun and the woman’s field was left chasing her
tracks. In the second half of the event Candice showed great maturity to close the
gap on Speedy to a little over 8 minutes.
MTN's Eszter Erdelyi took third position followed by an impressive Catherine Williamson
(bizhub) competing in her first Marathon.
Williamson has recently finished 2nd in the EP Herald and the Ride for Sight and
is spending more time on a mountain bike in preparation for the Cape Epic.
According to Williamson the event was one of the toughest things she’s ever done
“but I’ll definitely be back for more” quipped Williamson.
