14/10/2011 Stopforth and Williamson dominate
DCM Cape Pioneer TrekTeam bizhub's Ischen Stopforth and Catherine Williamson proved to be unbeatable in the 2012 DCM Cape Pioneer Trek, winning a total of five stages of the six event stage race.
Stopforth was one of the heroes of last year's event where she crashed heavily during the first stage and despite enduring severe pain raced on to win the stage with her mixed team partner Marcel Deacon.
X-Rays after the stage showed three of Stopforth's ribs broken. Despite the broken ribs she valiantly finished the tour fourth overall in the mixed team category.
"This year, together with Catherine Williamson, I put last year demons to rest" said a satisfied Ischen on completion of the sixth stage.
"It's been a very tough stage race" Said Catherine "Our plan was to ride very hard in the first three stages so as to give ourselves enough of a cushion to relax a bit in the second half of the Trek. This has to be one of the toughest challenges I've done. Stage two in particular sticks out in my mind with a lot of 'hike a bike' sections and some very tough and treacherous descents"
"Stage three in particular was a very tough day for both of us" continued Ischen 'with some rather extreme weather conditions, even the Marquee blew away at the finish and we had to stay in the Albertina School hall instead!
Honestly speaking this event is quite possibly the toughest event on the local calendar. Last year I thought it was harder than the Epic but after this year's Epic, I don't know which of the two the greater challenge is. What I do like in particular about this event though, is the fact that it's a real community driven event. In every town the whole community gets involved and many people stand to benefit from the towns hosting of the event".
Despite the weather conditions on stage three, luck proved to be on the side of the bizhub pair who endured no serious mechanicals or mishaps in the tour. Stopforth and Williamson are proving to be a very tough pair to beat in mountain biking, having judged from their respective performances this year which included the overall Elite Ladies Category win in the Joberg2C.
Catherine recently returned from the world elite ladies road championships, only to start her first MTB tour on South African soil two days after her return. "I'm enjoying the mountain biking" said Catherine "it's a very different challenge to road racing".
What made the win of the bizhub pair even more impressive is the fact that they finish eleventh overall in the Men's Elite Category. Second place in the Ladies Elite Category was filled by the international pairing of Katrin Neumann and Martina Meissgang (Mountian heros). Leanne Brown Waterson and Hanelie Steyn (Display Mania Sludge Ladies) took third overall.
