Ride for Sight - 13/02/2012

Our first race as a team this year! All dressed in brand new kit we started the Ride For Sight. The plan was to get 2 girls in the break because we were six so we felt confident, but things don’t always go as planned and not just for our team coz’ even the race was kind of chaotic!

The first 20km or so the pace was very high. The bunch did around 45 to 50km/h and no one obviously got away then. A few times someone would attack but without major effort the bunch just kept up. Then it was like everyone was waiting for the race could go by so they could take their shot in the last few kilometres before the finish or even in a sprint at the finish line. Nothing happened for almost 60km! I was feeling really nervous, everything was just too calm. It had to be the calm before the storm I thought.

Then we got to a hill and the bunch got mixed with one of the men’s vet bunches. Things got really chaotic then! I didn’t even see when a break of three girls got away. After the hill I saw that some of us got dropped and that the rest of the ladies were way in front of as, mixed with another men’s bunch. I knew that panic won’t help so I just kept going as hard as I can and eventually I caught up with the other ladies as we went down a decent.

A few more attacks went and when no one else could cross or get away, our team went to the front immediately and started pacing, or rather chasing. Unfortunately the race was almost over and we didn’t catch the break. The finish was insane. The bunch went into a few sharp turns that led to a really scary bunch sprint and then it was all over.

As soon as the race finished I already knew what I have to do to get a better placing in the sprint at the next race. I have to make sure before the race that I know exactly where the finish will be and more or less what it would look like because I’m sure that this weekend, if I had just known that the sprint would be right after a few sharp turns I would have made sure that I am better positioned. Especially when it’s a bunch sprint like this weekend, it’s such a small gap between say sixth place and twelve place and yet on the results it’s a huge difference.
